Beijing, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) September 16 is International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. Zhao Yingmin, Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment, said that since joining the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplet the Ozone Layer, China has strictly fulfilled its international commitments and eliminated 504,000 tons of substances that deplet the ozone layer, making positive contributions to the protection of the ozone layer and the mitigation of climate change.
He introduced the situation at the 2022 China International Ozone Layer Protection Day commemoration Conference held by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on Monday. Zhao Yingmin said that since the conclusion of the Montreal Protocol 35 years ago, with the joint efforts of all parties and the international community, the world has eliminated more than 99% of ozone-depleting substances, and the ozone layer hole in the atmosphere has been healed year by year.
China acceded to the Montreal Protocol in 1991. As of September 15, 2021, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplet the Ozone Layer will officially enter into force in China. HFCS are commonly used substitutes for ozone-depleting substances and have a strong greenhouse effect. Over the past year, China fully implemented the Kigali Amendment and included HFCS in the control list and list, opening a new chapter in coordinated protection of the ozone layer and response to climate change.
Zhao said that China will continue to improve its system of regulations and policies, strictly implement tasks and commitments, continue to strengthen capacity building and deepen international cooperation to make greater contributions to the protection of life on earth.
The conference was held by video, and more than 200 guests from international organizations, member units of the National Ozone Layer Protection Leading Group, relevant departments and bureums of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, local ecological and environmental departments, scientific research institutes and industry associations attended the conference.
